Constructive feedback “downwards”
August 5, 2023
What is your "road to success"?;
January 6, 2024Freedom asked me...
“NO” is a word we have all said at some point. Sometimes with ease, sometimes with more difficulty and with delay, and sometimes we don't say it when it's necessary.
Eleftheria came to the first coaching session with a clear goal: «"Life, I want to say “"NO"” and I'm struggling. How can I say it and feel good about it?"»
Spontaneously, I took a test with 3 questions. It was almost impossible for him to answer anything other than “NO”!
G:Do you want salt in your coffee?;
Q: NO, of course! You can't drink coffee with salt! He answered with a smile and without a second thought!
G: How about paying me for the session without it happening?;
Q: NO, that doesn't interest me! This time, without a smile.
Z: To continue, I'll tie your eyes and hands, okay?;
Q: NO, of course. In coach I came to you as a torturer! He looked at me with an intense gaze full of anguish.
G: You said three “NOs” in a row without a second thought, how did you do it?;
Every person has their own limits, as long as they understand them and decide if they want to change them.
The session continued utilizing the coaching tools. In the end, Eleftheria understood that:
- A clear and direct “NO” is often best for everyone. There is no reason to try to avoid a situation or do something that goes against my principles and values.
- It's good to have a reason for every “NO.” This also helps the other person understand why I can't say yes, without making excuses.
- I immediately say “NO” to people who try to manipulate me. I stand firm in my decision, without feeling guilty, when someone tries to make me feel bad or convince me to do something I don't want to.
- For every “NO”, I can give an alternative solution, if there is one.
Saying “NO” may take some practice, but it’s a skill worth cultivating. It helps us maintain control over our lives and take care of ourselves.
Which "NO" do you want to say?;
Today we celebrate the heroic "NO" of October 28, 1940. Happy birthday!
