«"How do I say 'NO'?"“
October 28, 2023Constructive feedback “from top to bottom” (i.e. from the boss to the subordinate) is becoming increasingly important in the workplace. It is one of the skills that every director, supervisor, manager, team leader and in general every person who manages a group of employees should cultivate.
What is constructive feedback? It is a form of feedback that aims to promote the development and continuous improvement of individuals' performance. Through constructive feedback you can highlight the positive aspects of performance and make suggestions for improvement, rather than focusing exclusively on the negative points.
Feedback as a means of reinforcement: Constructive feedback is a powerful motivator for employees. When an individual receives constructive feedback on their work, their self-confidence and desire to continue improving are boosted. Feedback can encourage any employee to develop new skills or accept new challenges.
Recognition of achievements: Constructive feedback allows employees to recognize the progress they have made and then focus on areas that need further improvement. This type of feedback can enhance a sense of self-worth and job satisfaction.
Enhancing professional development: Constructive feedback promotes employee professional development. When employees receive information and advice on improving their skills and job performance from their supervisors, they acquire new knowledge and skills.
Developing a positive work environment: Constructive feedback helps create a positive work environment. It is important that it is provided in a kind and supportive manner.
Here are some ideas on how to provide constructive feedback to the employee:
- Choose the right time of day and place. Avoid giving constructive feedback when you are stressed or angry. Choose a quiet place where you can talk privately.
- Start by acknowledging the positive aspects of the employee's performance. This shows your appreciation for the person's work and that you are willing to help them improve.
- Then, follow up with specific information about what the employee can improve. Be as specific as possible and provide examples and specific facts.
- Try to be as kind and supportive as possible. Remember that constructive feedback is not about criticizing the person, but about helping them grow.
- Encourages the person to propose ideas and solutions for their own personal improvement. A person supports their own ideas more enthusiastically than those of others. They are worth listening to.
- Ask the employee to give you their opinion on your feedback. This will help you find out if they understand what you are discussing and if they are willing to take action.
- Finally, agree on the individual action plan and monitor progress.
