Returning from the relaxation of vacation to the challenge of work
September 6, 2024
What is the role of work in the mental health and well-being of workers?
January 14, 2025Angelos, who is new to his role as an L&D specialist at a large company, joined the session by noting that change has become an integral part of his daily work. Rapid technological advancements, evolving organizational processes, and changes in management decisions are forcing employees to constantly adapt.
Tell me, coach, how will I support people to adapt to the changes occurring inside and outside the organization?;
What should I answer to this pertinent and crucial question of Angelos?;
I have experienced countless organizational, technological, strategic, personal, family, etc. changes. Each change erases its own Circle going through the same Stages[1] until it is completed. At the beginning (1ο Stage) there is resistance to change, indifference or ignorance of its need. Employees often feel insecure, fear the unknown or believe that change is not necessary. Then (2ο Stage) some begin to recognize the need for change. There is usually confusion about how to implement the change and the implications. A period follows (3ο Stage), where despite the recognition of the need for change, there is still resistance. Here people may question the effectiveness of the new approach or worry about the implications for their development. Then the implementation of the changes begins (4ο Stage). Here there may be challenges and difficulties in implementing the new procedures. Until the time comes (5ο Stage) where the changes become part of the daily operation of the organization. It is important to ensure that the changes are sustainable, that employees have embraced them and are working towards maintaining successful habit / behavior changes over time.
With the "hat" of a coach, it is important to facilitate my coachee, in this case Angelos, to reflect, to seek resources for the empowerment of people, in order to formulate and implement an action plan for the successful completion of each change.
Changing my «hat», as an adult educator, I know that education contributes to cultivating adaptability in a dynamic business environment. When businesses undergo change, whether it is the adoption of new technologies, restructuring teams or changing strategy, education plays a crucial role in the smooth transition to the new situation. With education, people: a) find it easier to understand the reasons behind the change, its objectives and its impact on their work, b) utilize the necessary tools and knowledge to respond to new requirements c) feel capable of facing challenges and their self-confidence is strengthened, d) uncertainty and resistance that accompany change are reduced. e) a learning culture is cultivated and continuous development is encouraged.
Changing my «hat» again and wearing that of a Mentor, I can suggest creating programs that meet the specific needs of the change. Such programs may include: a) Mentoring and coaching to provide personalized support to employees, b) E-learning for flexible learning at times and days that suit each employee, c) Workshops and interactive seminars for the exchange of ideas and problem solving, d) Training in collaboration with external partners to integrate expertise outside the company, etc.
I return to the session and begin with an open question: How are you preparing yourself for this change, Angel?;
How are you preparing for the changes?;
I'm here to discuss.
